FLYING TO THE TT
With just one airport on the Isle of Man, Ronaldsway, found in the south of the Island, getting to and from the Isle of Man for the TT Races is simple with easy air travel from several airports around the UK.
The combination of budget airlines, frequent flights and the new TT fan trend of visiting for a few days rather than the whole week, it is no wonder we’re seeing more people visiting the TT via plane than before. We’ve put together a guide on flying to the Isle of Man for the TT.
FLIGHTS TO THE ISLE OF MAN
EasyJet, Loganair and Aerlingus operate direct routes from Belfast, Birmingham, Bristol, Dublin, Edinburgh, Liverpool, London Gatwick, London City, London Heathrow and Manchester, to the Island.
Most airlines operate daily flights to the Island with those from the UK taking as little as 30 minutes in some cases!
While you can’t bring your bike on the flight, flying can provide easier accessibility when coming to the Isle of Man from further afield. You can book from a number of cities worldwide, to connect with a UK city above before travelling on to the Isle of Man.
If you are travelling from further afield, British Airways and Logan Air codeshare to offer through-flights from all over the world.
FLYING TO THE ISLE OF MAN IS EASY
Once you land on the Island, the airport is compact so time between landing and collecting your bags is just a matter of minutes.
Owing to the fact that Ronaldsway is a local domestic airport, and flights land and take-off regularly, buses and taxis are regular so you don’t have to spend a lot of time trying to get to the hedges! There’s more information on travel from the airport here.
Ronaldsway is a small airport with just 5 gates, so the security queues are minimal and wait times in the airport are usually short and comfortable. That means on your way out, after getting to the airport as early as the airline requires, you can relax with a drink whilst enjoying TT+ before catching your flight home in peace.
THE AIRPORT IS JUST 20 MINUTES FROM THE TT GRANDSTAND
Once you’ve exited the airport, the TT Grandstand is just 20 minutes away by bus or taxi, so you can be in the thick of the paddock within an hour of touchdown. Click here for bus information, and here for taxi information. Want more on-Island travel information? Click here for a full round up.
CAMPING AND FLYING TO THE TT
Value for money is a key theme for those when visiting the TT Races, and camping offers this for many. Combining this with a flight may help you get the most from your trip, but it requires some extra planning regarding bringing what you need to comfortably camp.
TENTS
The kit you can bring by flight to the Isle of Man by and large depends on baggage size restrictions. Any tents etc. must fit in a bag that is of an appropriate size for the airline you are travelling with.
Don’t want to worry about bringing a tent? Many campsites allow you to stay in high-quality pre-erected tents or glamping pods! Check out our information on camping here for more information [LINK] or click here for information on package operators. [LINK]
CAMPING STOVES
Regarding camping stoves and fuel containers, there is more guidance that differs per airline. Be sure to check with your airline but some guidance is below:
FROM THE EASYJET WEBSITE:
Camping stoves and fuel containers that contain a flammable liquid can only travel in the aircraft hold provided the container has been drained of all liquid before the flight. Camping stoves and fuel containers cannot be taken on board the aircraft.
FROM THE LOGANAIR WEBSITE:
Camping stoves and fuel containers can be carried on flights with Loganair but they will require the airline’s approval prior to flying. Contact Loganair customer services when booking.
FROM THE AERLINGUS WEBSITE:
Camping stoves and fuel containers that have contained a flammable liquid fuel (fuel tank/container must be empty) require Advance Notification to Aer Lingus (48 hours).
The Isle of Man has many restaurants and many of the campsites offer cooking facilities so the easiest way to overcome these issues is to make the most of what the Island has to offer.
MISSING YOUR MOTORBIKE? HIRE ONE
We wouldn’t be the island synonymous with motorbikes without offering you the chance to ride one if you can’t get yours here. Check out our article on motorbike hire here.
